well the song that inspired this thread, 'Lions writing the bible' by 'Third Eye Foundation' - probably the most influential song on me....it sounds like the instruments are moaning
the next is 'clear day' by 'Ulrich Schnauss' - i'm listening to this song for the first time ever....and its very inspiring....its like My bloody valentine mixed with 'boards of canada'
'boards of canada' is an awesome duo you should at least try - if you like one song you'll love them all and sadly vice versa (ie if you hate one song you hate them all). i'd recommend 'you could feel the sky' and 'kid for today'
also check out 'brian eno' - 'An ending (ascent)' is like the holiest song ever.....and check out 'signals'
listen to 'kalpol intro' and then 'bike' straight after (by 'autechre'). truly epic songs

i will also add tortoise. if you ever get a chance to see these guys live, don't pass it up. i swear i wasn't under the influence of ANYTHING going there, but i couldn't tell the difference once they started playing.
also, there is a band called talk talk, who has an album titled "laughing stock" that is amazing. certainly worth checking out...very vocal-intense and theatrical.

i was a late bloomer, and i caught them on the "It's All Around You" tour. that is a great album, but i also here good things of their other material. i cannot comment on it though, cuz i have only heard bits and pieces at friends' houses.
