hey, i'm just curious as to everyone's opinion on this topic. generally, what i am wondering, is how do you think music (mainly rock) has been affected by the use of drugs during the writing process?
there are certain bands that appear to have been obviously affected by them, more so in the early days of rock...look at the cover of cream's "disraeli gears" for crying out loud, but do you think that these musicians would have written such monumental music, melodically and/or lyrically, if they had been clean their entire lives?
i guess the reason i ask is that i don't drink or smoke...not to mention i avoid the hard drugs...and i will admit that i am curious as to how getting lifted before i sit down with my guitar or pen to write might affect things. for all of you who play instruments and dabble in the drug scene, let me know what you think : ]

i've always wondered about this. drugs i think do aid your musical creativity....the thing that stops creativity is saying "i dont like that bit" or "that sounded too cliched" - i suppose if your under the influence of drugs your more open about things and less likely to care what you're playing/writing
the best music i make is when i just play and play concentrating not on what i'm playing but how i'm feeling. when i stop to think the music usually sounds like something i've already played

if you can write good original music without drugs, i don't see why you should use them [to write music]. i think if i was on drugs [writing music], it'd be a lot of noise because anything really sounds good when you don't have full judgement. then again, this is coming from a drummer.
i've played shows drunk, on pills, etc etc [with drums] and it has either been a hindrance or a real boost. alcohol for the most part with music is a hindrance, pot on the other hand makes me chill and not play anything really 'hard' but more so on the complex soft side.
as for keyboard, i havent really tried. writing music is frustrating enough on keyboard (without it being 'noisecore').
i'm sure drugs open up creativity but sometimes its so borderline to 'noise' it's really gross. but than again, i could say that for hardcore and must hardcore isn't influenced by drugs. ;x
i think drugs with music can be positive. time to try with keyboard!

i used to smoke pot A LOT, i mean... atleast a joint everyday, but since then i've really cut back because that's just not healthy for you. i play guitar, and i wouldn't consider myself a great guitarist, but i can play some stuff. and whenever i would get high, i would always break out my acoustic and just start strummin' away... it probably sounded like shit, but to me it sounded like something haha. i'm more into getting high and listening to music rather than playing it.

You can't deny that drugs havnt had an effect on some music, which I think is kind of sad. I don't make any music myself, and I don't take any illegal drugs..(pointless information). I don't think it matters how the music is made or whatver, aslong as I can sit here and enjoy it.

It's kind of a downer to find out that all your favorite music was created by people under the influence of drugs...not much point in complaining about it though. If someone has to drugs, better them than me. At least we get kickass music out of it.

maybe i'll do some expirementing with wine this summer and start off slow. i already write pretty mellow music, and although i've never been drunk, i could never see myself as an angry/depressed drunk. then again, i would prefer to write with just a buzz maybe, and i hear wine has the worst hangovers. so maybe anything i write will be more tranquil and elevator-ish and i can get a gig playing live music at a retirement home or something.

being drunk would not aid my music at all.....i'm slow and dopey when drunk maybe if i was tipsy tho, cuz i go really hyper
however i dont ever intend to take drugs ever.....i'd prefer to make music by creativity alone

i don't care where inspiration comes from, as long as it is put to use. and i'm asking this question because i notice that a lot of my music sounds the same or that i can hear my influences in the music i write. i guess i would love to be a founder of a completely new genre, but it is so hard to find something that has never been done before because all that you have to learn from is the music of the past. i'm currently toying around with writing some classical guitar pop music, but i always find myself running in circles.

i know what you mean. i believe the key is digging in to your feelings - i read this in a book called Zen Guitar. its hard to tell whether it actually helped my songwriting skills but its certainly changed the way i think about art in general

in an interview i read that cedric and co were really messed up writing acrobatic tenements and that cedric came up with the lyrics then
