this year, my room mate and i decided to host our own new years. we don't fit in with most bashes involving heavy drinking and whatnot, so we threw our own affair. we were feeling a little bit frisky, so we decided on home made sushi and chocolate fondue for the meal. we made them from scratch, so cooking prep time came in at just under 6 hours between the room mate, his brother, and myself. here is the room mate cutting up a shitake roll. we made a LOT of sushi. did a mention that it was a LOT of sushi? in the end, we had shitake, california, tempura eel, tempura sweet potato, and cucumber rolls. not pictured were the huge pot of miso soup, ginger chicken with basmati rice, and salad that were brought by the guests. here are a few of them enjoying the meal. i said we don't get belligerent, but that doesn't mean we don't have our fun. here's an artsy glass of the evening's champagne. everyone brought their instruments, computers, electronic controllers, etc. we piled them all into my bedroom and had a massive jam session. we had two computers running lexicon omega interfaces and sending out to different bass amps. overall, two basses, a keyboard, drum machine, and 4 microphones were running through the laptops. add in the three guitars, 3 hand drums, violin, flute, and anywhere between 5-15 people playing at any given time, and things become pretty fantastic. here is another artsy pic. this is my girlfriend and i playing adding to the ambiance. one last pic for the cute factor. here is my girlfriend and i dancing in the new year : ] overall, the night was amazing. we had friends in from michigan, new york, and every where in between. it was the best party we have hosted to date, and i am still feeling incredibly fortunate to have the friends that i do and the opportunities to bring them together. sorry for the long post. the experience was incredible, and i just wanted to have something to look back on for the memories. i hope you all had safe, great holidays and cheers for many more to come. : ]

hahha far out man your new years looks amazing! did you recordulate the righteous jamathons? tell your girlfriend brains says "hi" also - i wear the same combo all the time man - white t, black long sleeve shirt over. fuckin rocks.
my new years was pretty meh. i had to wake up at 5am that morning to start work at 630, doing staging and whatnot at the Southbound festival, and didnt finish work until 730 that night. got to friends house, they decided it wasn't happenin at that joint so we were to go to another place but i was the only sober one at the time so guess who drove. got to the new party and it was fairly blah really. just some dudes sitting out in the back yard drinking and smoking. when it hit new years things picked up a bit and 4 of us jumped in the pool they had there and just wrestled and cracked jokes and talked and just cut sick. good ending i guess.
reading about your new years has hell inspired me to throw crankin parties though man, you sir are legendary

unfortunately, we didn't record any of the music. it honestly didn't occur to me to even try, but the computers were already working a pretty heavy load...probably would have crashed if we pushed them any harder.
i know how the "only sober" scenario plays out from time to time, so i am glad that things ended out well for you by the night's conclusion. was there any decent music at the festival you worked?
i will certainly reemphasize the excellence of hosting parties. once you come to terms with the cleaning responsibilities and footing the majority of the bill, you realize that it pales in comparison to the experience. all of it is made ten fold easier by good company that will pitch in and help out as well.
i mean, come on...how many times will i see parties that include home made sushi, plum wine, watching planet earth, 4 vs 4 team foosball, massive jam sessions, AND not have to put up with assholes that i wouldn't want at the party? it is the only way to fly.

as you can see, the festival hasn't even started yet. we've got shitloads of work to do. in the next 2 days we have to set up some trussing and a whole pile of small PA's and DJ booths, and then friday night move them all to a different area which basically means working through the night. one of the big stages we built has to be dismantled by 10AM saturday morning so yeah we're working through the night. but i get AAA pass for the work and can basically watch all the bands from... wherever the hell i want to! free booze too. sunday we have to pack up a fucking massive stage and then monday tuesday wednesday next week pack up whatever is left. i will be totally and completely fucked by the end of this but hey its rock n roll.
i like your ideology on parties, i totally concur dude.

sounds like a rough few days ahead of you. atleast you will be able to catch some pretty good acts in between your obnoxiously long shifts.
what happens when there aren't any big shows coming through town? do your hours fluctuate constantly, or how do they keep you busy?

well, right now is the season for huge gigs for us. just because its summer at the moment really. when the big gigs aren't on we do have all sorts of other work to do, like maintenance and stuff at our shop, there's normally a decent amount of crappy little PA's and stuff which can be fun in their own right, and then can also mix bands at the pub called the Prince of Wales. but the hours fluctuate wildly, and sometimes its hard to make good money during winter. but my boss is a shit, im looking forward to changing to a different production company this year.

i simply cannot imagine life in your occupation. it seems like it would be extremes at all times; life would either be amazing because you get paid to work with music or you catch an incredible performance, or it would be horrible because sometimes there is such a thing as too much music and it seems like the hours can be excessive when things get to the grind. do you have another company already lined out? are you looking to do the same type of work there? bro, those rolls look delish!!! happy new year brother you're welcome here any time. let me know if you are ever stumbling through indiana and looking for a couch to crash on. i hope the new year is treating you well so far.
