Me, my girlfriend, and some friends went to see Area 2 at Shoreline Ampitheatre by San Jose, CA last Wednesday. We mainly went to see David Bowie, but all the other bands were great. (We avoided the rave tent, not our scene, heh)
Ash opened, they were great. They're Irish, and kinda punkish, but they hit the soft mellowtones. Almost like Robert Smith with a raspier voice singing lead for Weezer.
Blue Man Group played next. Note: NEVER WATCH BMG ON PSYCHADELICS!!! I didn't, but even sober, those guys were really trippy. They were awesome, even covered S.F. area prerequisite "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. They also covered Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", which was a really interesting interpretation. They're mainly a percusive band, but they make their own instruments, crazy sh|t.
Busta Rhymes was third. At first, a lot of the crowd was kinda standoffish, but by the end, almost everyone was into it. They even did an instrumental cover of "Ironman" by Black Sabbath. That's what I've always liked about Busta, he's undeniably hip-hop, but he's a very ecclectic personality, not afraid to reach out to a wider audience.
Bowie was fourth, he was awesome. Let me tell you, live, the guy still sounds the same (if not better) as he did in the 70's. He played a lot of the newer stuff (including my fave, his cover of The Pixies' "Cactus"), but also played a hell of a lot of the older stuff, from "Ziggy Stardust" and "Heroes" to "China Girl" and "Let's Dance" to my biggest surprise, "I'm Afriad of Americans". My girlfriend, a huge Bowie fan, had no voice by the end of the concert from screaming loudly, and neither did I. He's a 360 degree entertainer, too, even cracking jokes inbetween songs. If you like anything of Bowie's, even if it's just a casual like of "Space Oddity", you should really see him live if you get a chance, the man is that great.
Moby was next, but after two songs, we decided to beat the bay area traffic. I did catch "Porcelin", though, that was a good song. All in all, it was nice to see a concert without working it.
