if you had the chance to join any band in the studio and witness everything they recorded - all their b-sides, demos, and album songs - which band would you pick? for me, it would definately be Radiohead, i mean... all their albums are so much different than the last and i think it would be fucking awesome to watch those five guys work in the studio, they're all musical geniuses.

hey how come when cedric was in atdi he used guitar petals when he sings because they were used for his voice and he only used them live i believe. i dont think he used them on any of the ATD-I albums.

That's what the sound manip guy was for, you can hear vocal effects being triggered at certain moments still on bootlegs and live recordings. I don't know what they're going to do now, since they said they don't plan on getting another. But I like the effects, i just listened to ATDi's KXLU performance and there are lots of cool sounds he makes with them/

jeremy ward...the guy that died. he did all the voice effects for TMV. during shows, he was offstage working them.
i'd like to be in the studio with: mars volta, steely dan, and the beatles.

you could probably aruge that ATDI used voice effects during one armed scissor. during the end of the first verse, the "...it has access now" part has an effect during it, but it is layered over cedric's voice, so its not really changing the way his voice sounds if you catch my drift.

The vocal effect your talking about during the end of each phrase during the first verse, not just the last one actually. I listened back after you said that, and it's pretty cool if you listen closely, sort that speaking into a megaphone sound but also slightly watery. Live you just get the octave down part of it. I also like how one armed scissors switches between 4/4 and 3/4 time, I think so anyways. Overall ATDi's experimentations with sound and time signatures seem more natural and don't stick out as much as the Mars Volta's. I'd listened to One Armed Scissors for over a year before I even realized that was happening.

I don't know too much about it either, so I could be wrong, but basically most rock music is written in 4/4 time, like if you count with the underlying beat, you count to 4 then repeat. But the verse is in 3/4 which is a waltz beat, like it goes dum-dee-dum, dum-dee-dum, dum-dee-dum, dum-dee-dum. You could try to count to four, but it just wouldn't feel right. Then the verse kicks back into the 4/4 timing, the buh-nuh nuh nuh nuh- nuh 1---------2---3---4
It doesn't look even b/c I'm typing out the sound, but if you count 1-2-3-4 at a regular interval to the beat of the song, it should fit.

yeah...mars volta loves their 3/4 6/8...even 7/4 time...i hear omar's album is going to have crazy time signatures...like in take the veil (the soloy part)...16/9 or whatever...if that's even possible...

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You usually measure it in terms of 4 or a multiple of that if it's too slow or fast. So, when something is in 3/4 time, it means you count to 3 instead of 4, the 6/8 time, count to 6 instead of 8, etc, etc. Like cut that city is an example of 5/4 timing. the main riff, you count all the way to 4, but then at the end there's an extra buh! nuh! which means you have to count to 5 if you want to go to 1 again when the riff restarts. But even if you didn't understand that, I really don't think it's that important; unless you're planning to study music theory or something, it doesn't really matter.
