In the wake of the 10th anniversary of Kurt's death, I've been thinking about how no other band could really have that effect again. Many bands have tried to pick up the "crown" Nirvana left behind, but nobody has really been able to start a rock movement that sticks, or a movement that even a band can stay in the forefront of.
I'm just writing this 'cause I've been in the mood to start writing music again, this time with more emphasis on getting songs churned out quick, creatively and efficiently, and I think about how Nirvana made it easier for musicians to not have to dress like a neon drag queen to have an oppurtunity to be taken seriously as a rock band.
I remember when Kurt died, I was in eight grade. I wasn't watching a lot of MTV, since my parents blocked it at the advent of rap, so I snuck viewings at my friend's house every now and again. I remember how quick it seemed that one day, all you saw on MTV was GnR, Def Lepard and Warrant, then along comes Nirvana and this flood of bands who redefined what rock should be, then almost as quick, Kurt was gone, and "grunge" declined while "alt-rock" hung around for another 4 or 5 years. Just strange how one person could have such an effect.

Like all conspiracy theories, as far as I can tell, Kurt's "murder" is really based on pure speculation and half baked facts. The thing is, he was a heroin addict, heroin addicts usually die, it's pretty simple math. I always considered Nirvana to be pretty overrated, but I do understand their place in musical history, everyone does owe them a debt for bringing an end to hair metal.

i was never one of those kids who remembered what day Kurt Cobain died, i never took time out during that day to mourn him or anything like that but i am sad that he is gone. i would have really liked to see what nirvana could have done if he didnt die... i know that they could have done some amazing things.

I still think something's up with Courtney, though, she keeps trying to secure Nirvana's rights "for Frances' security", because "Kurt hated Dave and Krist before he died." I have a feeling Frances' college fund is now in the form of 9 track marks between Courtney's toes, but I ain't one to gossip, so you ain't heard that from me.

first of all, you might as well guessed that me and merc are probably the oldest ones here...because i feel nirvana was probably one of the most influential bands of the 90's......it did kinda suck that tey went mainstream, but they were still a good band. kurdt kobain was a very talented musician...his riffs, lyrics...they were very original. crazy story, i was frying on low grade acid when i heard kurt committed suicide, i thought i drove him to suicide (i guess it wasn't low grade) but yes, i feel kurt and nirvana deserve the respect as an original and excellent band....except for "smells like teen spirit" (hated it) but, you can only wonder how their newer stuff (if kurt was alive) would sound like, i think they would of only gotten better.
so pay respect youngsters..........j/k

I hate to say it, but I really don't care for Nirvana. Some of their songs are good, but I don't think they were Elvis or anything. I also don't have respect for people who take their own lives, so fuck him.

I guess para nos viejos, we had a different prespective having suffered through years of bad videos by crappy glittery glam big haired spandex bands who sucked worse than linkin park or good charolette (plus, back in those days, MTV played videos at least 15 hours of the day, so you really had to suffer through them). The few great Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, U2 and REM songs couldn't even make up for the mountain of shit built by watered down coked out versions of Van Halen (who were the real deal, but that dates me again). I'm getting too old for this shit.

10 years ago when i found out kurt took his own life, i started to get deperessed and took down my Nirvana poster and lit a candle, i turned on my tv and saw other fans taking their lives as well, i wondered by kurt took his life, by all good things must come to an end. For the remeberance of Kurts death i wore all black as usal.

kurt was killed, he didn't kill himself. soon there will be this special on tv that analyzes that theory, i've seen the previews for it. cobaincase.com convinced me.
without knowing that it was the 10-year anniversary, i bought 'in utero' like a month ago. only nirvana album i own. it was the only album in my cd player for like three weeks straight. its so fucking real, like raw emotion. not always angry and depressing like a lot of people think. every song rocks so hard, every single one. one of those albums i can listen to straight through a million times. the tenth track and the second track just totally kick ass. damn shame that kurt died.

kurt was killed, he didn't kill himself. soon there will be this special on tv that analyzes that theory, i've seen the previews for it. cobaincase.com convinced me. The evidence still looks pretty sketchy to me, he's unable to come up with a convincing motivation. WHY would Courtney kill her husband if they were getting a divorce? She'd get half his shit, which is a lot, which ever way you look at it. And again, he continues to negate the fact he was a heroin addict, and that, heroin addicts die. Him getting checked out of treatment doesn't mean anything on its own, it's not uncommon for an addict to relapse several times, especially if they don't feel like they need the treatment. He had tried to kill himself weeks previously, so it's not like him being successful this time was out of the blue. That guy calls it the million dollar die, but the very person he cites as a close friend was the one who bought the gun for Cobain because Cobain wasn't allowed to do so himself. I'm not nearly as familiar with this conspiracy as the moon landing one...but it just bothers me the language and accusations are so similar.

In Utero is about as real as it gets. I've always liked Steve Albini's production work, and In Utero sounds more in-your-face than Bleach or Nevermind. Very Ape-Milk It- Pennyroyal Tea is probably my favorite 3-song lineup on any album.

I like both the Pixies and Nirvana. Musicians have to borrow from other musicians, and there's a fine line between ripping off and borrowing. Kurt said he ripped off the Pixies, but I don't even hear that much resemblence to warrant saying he "ripped them off".
I mean, the Beatles borrowed from Chuck Berry and Little Richard, the Stones borrowed from 50's and 60's Blues and R&B, Elvis borrowed from gospel and blues. What makes them and Nirvana different than "Rip-off's"? They took those styles and made them their own, unlike Jet turning Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" into "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" with little differentiation. I hear the Pixies as an influence on Nirvana, as well as the Raincoats and the Beatles. Sum of all parts.
