I know you've hear it all before, but I was looking at the ATDI page on www.songmeanings.net (which seems to be down) and thought it was really good that they went though most of the ATDI songs and tried to work out what they meant. We really need to get a good topic going again on this!

I love songmeanings.net...but sadly it does not work at home for some reason. It is a very rare treat to check it out.
But yes, let's get things rolling - I want people's opinions on the song "Ticklish" from Acrobatic Tenement.
What do you think it means?

ticklish is a song about teenhood...rebelling and those types of things..."i only colored outside the lines cause i got the knack" that line gives me a sense of rebelion...like i smoke cigarettes cuz i can kind of attitude..."stenciled teen initials that were carved in the roof of my mouth only to bark the words of so and so, fuck so and so, so and so" well, often initials are carved into trees by young lovers, and getting carved in the roof on a mouth is just a spin on that, maybe a little sexual inuendo, too...the fuck so and so part is just the nature of teens, fuck you, man...
"been dancing in bathroom stalls, excreting words just for this song" this could be smoking pot in the bathroom at school, or drinking too much and throwing up in the bathroom somewhere, i hear it's a part of growing up, and well, it's no secret that cedric and friends have done their fair share of drugs, cedric still smokes pot almost every day...
"pall bearer we are and all that we never get and all my little pushed fall on your deaf ears" maybe a fall on deaf ears reference (not unlike the defacto reference in chanbara) but this could have something to do with not caring about death and being the pall bears at your grandma's funeral, for example...and the falling on deaf ears is just the fact that teens have a hard time getting people to listen to them...
so, yeah, if you have any questions, i'd be glad to answer...i'm an english major, maybe as a result of analyzing atdi lyrics, but this is what i do...to sum it up, tisklish is a song about teenage angst, and i think you can hear that in the way cedric sings the song...

my opinion on 198d is that its about a band touring in winter and getting shows cancelled and stuff but there are lyrics that seem irrelevant
'Born in hearts etched in cold tremors that warn us of ourselves walk away'

Motherprussia, that has been the BEST interpretation of Ticklish I have EVER seen. I agree with you on all of that. My idea was along with yours but nothing in detail like that! Bravo...but!
What about the ;
"Please get some medication Simple. It's simple... We must die with dignity."
Since it's quoted, could it be something that they were told? Or is it implying they should get medication (an often common thing with depressed/angry teens)?
Also, I think;
'kicking in these windows kicking in these windows on the roof of my mouth gonna bark these words on the roof of my mouth'
"kicking in these windows' describes how he(they) are getting out of the 'teen' angst of their life perhaps.
Great interpretations guys - let's keep this discussion alive!

Someone once said that 'catacombs' was about someone accepting death but not wanting to die.
I think the line "This gravity is a quadriplegic horse and carriage" means , a horse and carriage as in a funeral precession but the horse is quadriplegic so it cant move. And gravity is the thing that keeps us here. So we know we are going to die but not yet.

the "kicking in windows" is just another picture of teenage angst..."barking words on the roof of my mouth" is the same because when you get pissed at your parents and yell back at them, you're barking at them...at least that's the impression i get...
and 198d is about tony's grandmother who is buried in his home country lebanon...the only way they could identify her grave is by the plot number 198d...also, tony wrote all the 198d lyrics, and most of the lyrics on vaya, very little written by cedric...

yo MP, analyze skips on the record!

Post by motherprussia on Jul 17, 2004 1:49:28 GMT -5
ok, i've always thought that skips on the record was about sex...here we go:
the first line is "pregnant with the keys to your stickshift mood" pregnant is a loaded word there, and keys to your stickshift mood...we'll stickshift is a phallac structure, and "key's to your stickshirt mood" seems to be like a girl wanting to get some like "i'm got this penis for your turned on mood"...but the lines "can't get yourself ignition" seem to mean that someone is sexually frustrated..."grease stained parking spot" also carries some sexual inuendo, getting it on in a vacant parking lot...and now we come to a doozy of a line "dipped in the secretion of your syphilis flirtation" and then cedric asks "must we spell it out?" which kind of suggests that you should know what he's talking about..."roman candle" is another phallac structure "cradles teething dressed in innuendos" and well, innuendo is another time where cedric is going "wink wink nug nug"..."c is for contraction 30 minutes apart" again with the pregnant thing, like this is what could happen is i sleep with this girl..."umbilical agendas in the the coup de tat" and "back seat afterbirth" are two more pregnancy related lines...and then the "mao tse tung ferver in his petty glance" mao tse tung was the communist leader of china as you probably know, he was a very dirty human being, he rarely bathed, had horrible teeth, and enjoyed having sex with 14 year old girls, so mao tse tung was maybe one of the horniest people ever, and one of the worst...
in conclusion, skips on the record seem to point out the bad things with having promiscuous sex...it's saying "look at all the things that could go wrong"...so yeah...
what's next?

I want to know what you think about Porfirio Diaz, motherprussia. I'm very confused on that one.
It is just about Profirio Diaz's ruling back then, or is it metaphorically connected with something of today Cedric is refering to?

i'd have to say that porfirio diaz is a very emo song...it seems to be about past relationships and regrets of the past..."kiss and kill your boyfriend" relating to relationships..."and all the rich ones, too" seems like cedric might be a little angered by a past relationship, maybe the girl left him for someone with money, and he's saying watch out for this girl she only wants your money when he says "rich kids of the world unite"..."dime on the bleachers"...people make out under the bleachers..."head says not that far away but the only way up is down and i keep on falling" it's like that dime saying love isn't far away, but you have to keep getting hurt to finally maybe find the one, so you "flip it again, but the answer hasn't spared its change" which means there has to be change in your life, and your love life (cedric does a great job with the double meanings of words here, with the money theme, and really, i think that ties to porfirio diaz; i don't know much about that mexican leader, but maybe he was corrupt or gave mexico and economic boost)
"you'll never forget that forgetting's required" is one of my favorite atdi lyrics...to move on, you have to forget the mistakes and broken hearts of the past...
"we're proud to be pricks, we're proud to be assholes" is another favorite of mine...guys can be assholes to girls and whatnot so this seems like a sarcastic remark...it just shows that everyone makes mistakes, but don't regret what you've done so much...that might be a bit of a stretch...
"picking up the pieces one by one" this line fits in with the relationship theme...when all goes to hell, you have to pick yourself up and move on..."answer, someone, anyone, won't you pick up the pieces you left behind?" this is just a feeling of helplessness you might get after being dumped...and that's the feeling i get out of the song...cedric was dumped, and this is his little emo song...
also, i'm saying cedric wrote this, but the only album he wrote almost all of the lyrics for was relationship of command...so there's no guarentee that cedric wrote all these lyrics, or even inspired the idea for the lyrics...i just say cerdic wrote it cuz he's my man...

That's great and all....but the real challenge is to understand TMV lyrics....it's like solving a really difficult riddle...i'm perplexed...

hit me with your best shot (heh)...but really, once you understand that deloused is about the death of julio venegras, and once you read the story book that goes along with it (which i haven't, by the way)...and once you look up the definitions of the weird words, it really isn't too bad...

tira me a las aranas means throw me to the spiders rascuache is a spanish slang term with many many meaning, often depending on what spanish speaking country you're in...i know one of the meaning is kitch, or cheap stuff used to decorate your house...i know most of the meaning have a negative connotation... i need to find a good set of lyrics for this apparatus must be unearthed, but in the meantime i suggest going here: www.thecomatorium.com/board/index.php?showforum=14 it's a forum all about the song meanings of tmv songs...to be honest i never really tried to sit down and analyze one of their songs, but i'll try it when i have a little more time...i don't have the book, which you can order here: www.goldstandardlabs.com but the book sort of explains things...remember, cedric is a high school dropout who does numerous drugs, and his book reads like it, too...
